Volume 2 Number 7
Hi Folks,
Kim's Drama Blog
I will be giving a keynote address to the Special Interest Group Festival being conducted by the Educational Computing Association of WA on March 20. See Details in the Professional News section.
Come Monday I start teaching Teaching Secondary Drama! A childhood goal finally realised!
I will soon be undertaking the next phase of my Master of Education thesis "Digital Drama - Teacher attitudes to technology" - I hope I can count on the many Western Australian drama teachers to put up their hand to complete my short (10 minute) survey. There is already interest being shown in my findings from the Education Department, CSaLT, ECAWA and a range of tertiary institutions. It looks like being an interesting examination.
LESSON/ACTIVITY IDEA
I am simply going to provide a reference here. I am starting my position as Lecturer in Drama Education this coming week and need to organise my first classes. I actually used this lesson with my senior classes recently - it is effective and introduces some sound principles relating to acting.
It begins.. Now, let’s see how many of the emotions in the box at right you can muster and maintain for at least five seconds. You have a total of two minutes to get through as many as you can. When you’re ready, give yourself a “go,” punch the clock, and start your emotional countdown. (Don’t read beyond the list until you’ve played the game.) the whole lesson is at http://www.edta.org/pdf_archive/miller211200115264.pdf
I've been continuing to use the "Yes Let's" book and have found there are many useful aspects - especially for those new to teaching Theatre or Drama. One very useful section is the Chapter called "Learning Paths" (p65). This chapter is designed to show you effective sequences of introducing various TheatreSports games and activities in order to build the skills of students as well as maximising the potential to learn through Drama. It includes appproaches and progressions for Cooperation, Awareness, Oral Language, Resiliency, Status, Physical Storytelling and others. I'm starting to see the real value in this rather colourful text.
You can download three sample activities from the Australian Institute of TheatreSports website. You can also find details on how to purchase the book from Papercut Media.
RECOMMENDED WEBSITES
My school has just implemented Moodle (an online course delivery system) and we are exploring the possibilities. It is now web served and can be browsed. As yet all courses are closed access but visitors can look at the structure and scope of the site. SCHOOL MOODLE - For those unfamiliar with Moodle it is an open source package available free to schools. It is based on social contructivist principles and has a potential only limited by the vision of the teachers using it.
Performing Arts Perspectives
A reminder to WA teachers also that Performing Arts Perspectives is happening soon - check the CelebrateWA site for details.
International and Local Theatre in Perth
There's also a great range of material available at the Festival
of Perth (and Fringe). I guess we are looking at
possibilities for our Year 11 and 12 classes. The SunRoom in
Maylands also has an interesting programme during March that has a
showcase/demonstration of approaches to acting followed by a
performance. I'm waiting on Sue to send me the full
details. Stay posted and the information will come through.
Articles
from Teaching Theatre and Dramatics
The database of articles at the Educational
Theatre Association are well worth a look. Just leave the
search box empty and click search to bring up the list of over 180
articles in PDF format. I refer my students to these so they
can add to their folios.

Impro
for StorytellersREMEMBER THAT KEITH IS WORKING WITH JOHN MARSDEN - SEE PREVIOUS NEWSLETTERS FOR DETAILS
Impro for Storytellers is the follow-up to Keith Johnstone's classic Impro, one of the best-selling books ever published on improvisation. In this book, Johnstone takes a further decade of experience as a teacher and coach and explores how an individual's potential can be released in group settings.
"Be more boring!" he might yell to a student striving to be original.
"Be more obvious!" he could advise a clever performer.
These are unorthodox techniques, but ones that are part of the games that have made Johnstone's work uniquely effective in the theatre community. Beyond its strictly theatrical applications, Impro for Storytellers aims to take jealous and self-obsessed beginners and teach them to play games with good nature and to fail gracefully.
If you've ever been clumsy and awkward, this book will improve your interpersonal skills and encourage a life-long study of human interaction.
